Tatcha – Skincare Inspired by Japanese Beauty Rituals

After a decade of working for large corporations, Victoria Tsai, Harvard MBA, yearned for simplicity and authenticity in her life. On a trip to Kyoto, Japan, she discovered a world of pure beauty, craftsmanship and heritage. A chance encounter with a modern-day geisha changed her life. Thus born Tatcha, a skincare line inspired by the disciplined grace and beauty of geishas. I met with Tsai, the company’s CEO and her business partner, Brad Murray at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills. The luxury store held a special Tatcha event for its discerning clients. The event attracted about 80 chic Barneys’s customers who surrounded Tsai to ask beauty questions.

“I created Tatcha as a way to share my treasure and knowledge I discovered on my journeys East,” said Tsai, the elegant Taiwanese American businesswoman who founded the company in 2009. Tatcha honors Japanese heritage with its simple and refined skincare collection based on a 200-year-old Japanese manuscript that introduced Tsai to the mysterious beauty rituals of geishas. It is believed to be the oldest beauty book written in Japan, and perhaps the only such work of its kind. The name Tatcha refers to the Japanese word for “standing flower” and is the inspiration for the company’s pure approach to effective skin care. They use only natural ingredients like red algae, green tea, peony, wild thyme, and ginseng roots, formulated and made in Japan.

During the afternoon, the debonair company president, Murray also mingled with customers. He told me he met Tsai at a Harvard alumni event in 2009. He has heard about the popular Japanese blotting paper, and saw the potential for expansion. He left his job in private equity to join Tsai the following year. The company’s headquarters is in San Francisco with a growing team of employees.

Armani Beauty

Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills recently hosted a Beauty Event featuring a personal appearance by Tim Quinn, the national director of creative artistry for Giorgio Armani Cosmetics. I have always liked the smooth texture of Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation, so it was an ideal occassion to meet with the beauty maestro. Quinn has a wonderful cheerful disposition and genuine warmth. Even though we had just met, he made everyone feel at ease and comfortable in asking him any beauty questions. A great tip Quinn shared was to use a primer with a hint of pink under your foundation to create a pretty rose glow. For a fresh summer look, Quinn recommended the Luminessence CC Cream with SPF 35, and adding a touch of the silky Maestro Liquid Summer Bronzer for a sun-kissed radiance. Throughout the afternoon, Quinn and the friendly Armani team mingled with casually chic ladies who arrived by appointment to see Quinn. It was an afternoon of true beauty and fun conversations with everyone looking their  Armani best.

The 20,000-square-foot urban oasis, located on the third floor of the five-star Montage Beverly Hills, offers 17 spa treatment rooms for men and women. My aesthetician, Adelina explained that the Caviar Facial is one of the most extravagent skincare treatments at the Beverly Hills location. It combines powerful antioxidants, protein rich caviar, and re-generating co-enzyme A, to deeply hydrate, improve elasticity and smooth skin texture. Following a thorough skin analysis, she massaged my face with swift upward strokes. The idea here is that a youthful-looking face begins with an entirely relaxed body, so she added a sublime scalp and neck massage. My skin looked refreshed and an overall radiant complexion was immediately noticeable.

After the facial, guests can unwind at the opulent two-story spa and enjoy deluxe amenities such as the Eucalyptus steam room, the dry redwood saunas or the mineralized wellness pool centered in a coed atrium. Spa Montage treats the pool with natural crystals that are hand-harvested from an underground seawater lake. The combination of 60 minerals helps soothes muscle soreness and also rejuvenates the body. I could not resist dipping in the mineral pool for a nourishing full-body treatment. Whether it is a pampering facial, a body therapy, or a holistic rejuvenation, the Spa Montage Beverly Hills is the place to experience a luxurious mind and body wellness.
